If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring India beyond the Taj Mahal or desert forts, let me tell you—South India is where the real magic begins. It’s a part of the country that feels like a completely different world. Sky-touching temples, lush green hills smelling of tea and cardamom, cozy houseboats sailing in the backwaters, and food that will pamper you for a lifetime.
In this blog, I’m sharing everything you need to know about planning a trip to South India—whether you’re interested in temples, beaches, wildlife, or just want to relax in nature.
So, why South India?
Because it’s quiet, beautiful, deeply spiritual, and very welcoming. It’s not as fast-paced as the North, and every state here has its own flavor. Literally and culturally.
– Ancient temples older than time (no pun intended)
– Jungles filled with elephants and tigers
– Quiet backwaters and coconut groves for days
– Cozy hill stations with tea plantations
– Authentic spicy food and soothing Ayurveda massages
– And people who smile even if they don’t understand your language
Let’s break this down state by state, so you can pick the vibe you like best.
This state is pure temple town energy. From sunrise rituals to ancient stone carvings, it’s a must-visit for culture lovers.
Start here. It’s a big coastal city with old churches, temples and beaches.
Those temples cut into rocks right by the sea? Unreal.
Silk saris and spirituality.
The temples here are huge, colourful and full of history.
For pilgrims and sea-lovers. The sunsets here are amazing.
Kerala is called “God’s own country” for a reason. Everything here is lush and peaceful.
– Cochin (Kochi) – A quiet coastal town with Portuguese and Dutch vibes.
– Munnar – Endless green tea hills. Looks like a painting.
– Thekkady – Wild elephants, spice gardens and jungle walks.
– Alleppey – Houseboats on calm waters. You must try it once.
– Kovalam and Varkala – Clean beaches, cliff cafes and yoga everywhere.
If you want a mix of majesty and nature, this is the place for you.
– Bangalore – Big city life with parks and pubs.
– Mysore – Gorgeous palaces, silk shopping and Dussehra celebrations if you visit in October.
– Coorg – Coffee plantations and cute cottages.
– Hampi – Ancient ruins that will leave your jaw open.
– Chikmagalur – Coffee again. Because why not?
Very few tourists visit here, which is why it is so special.
– Hyderabad – Charminar, biryani, pearls and Ramoji Film City.
– Tirupati – Famous temple city, super spiritual.
– Vizag and Araku Valley – Beaches + misty valleys = the perfect mix.
It feels like South India has taken a little vacation in France.
– Colourful houses, cool cafes and quiet ashrams
– Auroville is a must visit if you are interested in meditation and alternative lifestyle
– Cycle in the French Quarter. Feels like Europe.
