Delhi has too many markets for one day, but with the right order you can cover the best of them. The secret is geography: group the markets by area, start early in the old city before the heat and crowds build, and finish somewhere calm for dinner.
This itinerary gives you a realistic hour-by-hour plan for a full day of shopping in Delhi, with food stops built in.
Before You Start
- Pick your day carefully: many markets close one day a week, usually Sunday or Monday. Check before you plan.
- Use the metro: it is faster and simpler than a taxi through the traffic.
- Wear comfortable shoes: you will walk a lot, often on uneven lanes.
- Carry cash and a small bag: several stalls prefer cash or UPI, and a light bag is easier in crowds.
The One-Day Plan
9:00 AM: Start at Chandni Chowk
Take the metro to Chandni Chowk station and begin early, before the lanes fill up. Start with breakfast at Paranthe Wali Gali, then walk through the market. Spend the next two hours on the lanes that interest you most: Dariba Kalan for silver and attar, Chawri Bazar for paper and brass, and Khari Baoli for spices, dry fruit and tea. Many shops open between 10 and 11, so use the first hour for food and photography.
1:00 PM: Lunch Near Jama Masjid
Walk to the Jama Masjid area for a Mughlai lunch of kebabs, curries and biryani. Finish with a sweet, such as jalebi or kulfi, before leaving Old Delhi.
2:30 PM: Janpath and Connaught Place
Take the metro towards Connaught Place. Browse the Janpath street stalls for handicrafts, textiles and jewellery, then visit a government emporium for fixed-price crafts. Take a cafe break in one of the Connaught Place arcades.
5:00 PM: Dilli Haat INA
Continue to Dilli Haat for a second round of crafts in a more relaxed setting. The stalls here show work from artisans across India, and the quality tends to be higher than in street markets. Have an early evening snack from the food court.
7:30 PM: Dinner at Khan Market or Hauz Khas
End the day somewhere comfortable. Khan Market is compact and easy for dinner and a bookshop browse. Hauz Khas Village is better if you want a rooftop view and a livelier evening.
Alternative Plan: Budget Fashion Day
If your goal is clothing rather than crafts, replace the afternoon with Sarojini Nagar, then finish with Lajpat Nagar for ethnic wear and fabrics. Do not try to combine both with Chandni Chowk, since each one takes at least a few hours.
What to Buy Where
| If You Want | Go To |
| Spices, tea and dry fruit | Khari Baoli, Chandni Chowk |
| Silver jewellery and attar | Dariba Kalan, Chandni Chowk |
| Handicrafts and souvenirs | Janpath, Dilli Haat |
| Budget clothing | Sarojini Nagar |
| Sarees, suits and fabrics | Lajpat Nagar |
| Books and gifts | Khan Market |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting late. Old Delhi is much easier before midday.
- Trying to see too many markets. Three or four is a good target.
- Paying the first price. Bargain politely in street markets, but not in fixed-price shops.
- Skipping meals. Food is part of the experience, and a break prevents fatigue.
- Forgetting the weekly closing day.
Best Season for a Delhi Shopping Day
October to March is the most comfortable season. In summer, start at sunrise and move indoors for the afternoon. Festive weeks before Diwali are lively but very crowded.
